10 reasons to stay at W Amsterdam – review of our fabulous stay

Set the scene: W Amsterdam is modern, stylish atmosphere blends with historic details for hip guests.

IN GENERAL

The W Amsterdam magnificently delivers a hip, luxurious experience for its guests across both the W Exchange and the W Bank, two separate buildings with 238 rooms in total, each housing its own blend of stylish details that pay homage the property’s unique history.

The location of this five-star-pearl is fantastic and couldn’t be more central, right in the city centre of Amsterdam. The hotel’s impressive features include a rooftop pool, stylish lounge, well-liked steakhouse, and a beautiful spa, among many others. Rooms are hip and funky, with quirky touches and special details incorporating Dutch culture. And not to be missed; Mr. Porter Restaurant on top.

THE PROPERTY

The Exchange building has over five kilometres (three miles) of brass piping across ceilings in the lobby, lounge, and elsewhere, which is a nod to its history as home to the original telephone switchboard of the Royal Dutch Post.

Likewise, the Bank building was built in the early 20th century, and at the time was considered modern and high-tech. It was home to the KAS bank for 99 years and now the W Amsterdam has filled it with black and brass detailing reminiscent of its original vaults.

The Exchange building has more of a party scene, as it houses the lounge, pool, and Mr. Porter restaurant, while the W Bank is more of a relaxing retreat, with its spa, juice bar, and lobby design gallery. Guests can book a room in either and then have all of both building’s features available to them, though they may find the distance inconvenient.

THE CROWD

W Amsterdam attracts all types of affluent travellers, including celebrities, who are looking for a luxury experience, and its somewhat restrained style — when compared to other W properties — makes it a safe bet for design-conscious travellers of any age.

It is also a very popular hangout for the hip and alternative locals.

LOCATION

Couldn’t be more central. The location right next to Dam Square is unbeatable. More than central and all you need within walking distance.

ROOMS

Rooms and suites at the W Amsterdam are luxurious and packed with interesting design details. The decor and overall style varies between the rooms in the W Bank and W Exchange, but all rooms are put together with the W’s unique blend of cosy and chic elements.

Rooms vary in size, layout and décor within and across the two buildings. In the Exchange, they range from compact to fairly spacious, with high ceilings, large mirrors, glass outside-walls, and (very) open-plan bathrooms.

The design theme of the public areas continues with strong-lined fittings in some rooms styled out of concrete.

The duvet covers are the ones you really want to take home; so soft & comfortable!

Décor in the Bank still features a wealth of Dutch design, but the tone is warmer, more classical and the rooms slightly larger. Espresso machines and Marshall sound systems are standard throughout.

SERVICE

Young, sparky staff are on the ball and trained to deliver W’s trademark ‘Whatever/Whenever’ service. They know their town, and a resident W Insider will provide a direct link to Amsterdam’s art and design scene. Or let them reserve a dinner at in-house Mr. Porter or Dutches (Michelin Star Restaurant).

AMINITIES

In addition to the rooftop pool at Exchange, there’s a spa (name; AWAY) deep in the vaults at Bank: mysteriously lit, behind heavy vault doors and including a large gym (24-hour with Technogym equipment), HIIT fitness classes, pool and treatment facilities (beauty treatments, massages, sauna and steam room).

WHAT ELSE?

The rooftop bar at Exchange is a hot local hangout, featuring frequent parties and events (accessible to guests) of a fashion and design flavour. Or one step more chique; Mr. Porter on the same level for great views and food.

Three independently owned restaurants are incorporated into the hotel, as well as a large shop-cum-gallery-cum-incubator space for local fashion, art and music.
