Why Cinque Terre, Italy Is Worth Visiting

So, why is Cinque Terre so famous? Its unique blend of dramatic coastline, medieval villages, and terraced vineyards makes it one of the most photogenic and romantic spots in Europe. Yet, is it worth visiting Cinque Terre, Italy over, say, the Amalfi Coast? In many ways—yes.

Where Amalfi and Positano can feel overly polished, Cinque Terre still retains a raw, authentic edge. Each of the five village: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore has its own personality. But for the most magical experience, seeing them from the water is absolutely essential.

While the five towns are undeniably iconic, they are, understandably, very focused on tourism. For a deeper sense of local life, head slightly off the beaten path.

Tellaro
A hidden Ligurian gem just south of Cinque Terre. Narrow alleys, fishing boats bobbing in a tiny harbor, and barely any tourists. It’s everything you love about Cinque Terre, minus the Instagram mobs.

Ameglia
A medieval hilltop town and UNESCO-protected area near the Magra river. Quiet, local, and a great starting point if you’re planning to cross into Tuscany. From here, Forte dei Marmi is just a short drive away, with its wide sandy beaches and stylish boulevard.

CINQUE TERRE GUIDE

One hidden gem that perfectly bridges boutique intimacy with five-star comfort is the Grand Hotel Portovenere. Its name—Gulf of Poets—comes from the many literary figures who found inspiration here, including Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and D.H. Lawrence. With fewer crowds, elegant promenades, and crystalline coves, this area offers a more relaxed, romantic take on the Ligurian coast—and pairs beautifully with a stay in or around Cinque Terre.

Cinque Terre hiking: Blue Trail and beyond

If you love hiking, don’t miss the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail), the path that connects the five towns. The full hike takes about 5 hours, with varying difficulty.

Most beautiful stretch? Between Vernazza and Corniglia—olive groves, sea views, and fewer crowds.

• Cons: Limited five-star infrastructure, though Cinque Terre Italy boutique hotels like Hotel Porto Roca and La Torretta Lodge offer elevated charm.

Amalfi Coast: glamour and cliffside drama

• Best for: Luxury seekers, couples, honeymooners, and those who want beach clubs, limoncello, and polished Italian flair.

• Known for: Positano, Ravello, cliffside hotels with infinity pools, and dramatic coastal drives.

• Pros: Ultra-luxury hotels, Michelin-star restaurants, and beach clubs. Great access from Naples or Sorrento.

• Cons: Very touristy and expensive, especially in high season. Some say it’s become more “show” than soul.
